A Convenient Feature, but Is It Worth It?

If you don't find the double tap gesture on your Apple Watch as helpful as you thought it would be, you have the option to turn it off. The double tap gesture was first introduced with the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, but has since been made available on watchOS 10.1 alongside NameDrop.

What Does the Double Tap Gesture Do?

The double tap gesture allows users to control their Apple Watch Series 9/Ultra 2 with just one hand, without having to touch the display. By tapping their index finger and thumb together twice, users can quickly perform common actions on their Watch.

The Power of the Neural Engine

Apple attributes the new double tap gesture to the faster Neural Engine, which processes data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart sensor using a machine learning algorithm.

How to Turn Off the Double Tap Gesture

If you're not finding the double tap gesture useful, here's how you can turn it off:

  1. If you have an Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra 2:
    1. Go to the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
    2. Scroll down and tap on "Accessibility".
    3. Tap on "Double Tap".
    4. Toggle the switch next to "Enable Double Tap" to the off position.
  2. If you have an Apple Watch Series 8 or older:
    1. Note: This feature is not built into the system, but you can achieve a similar effect.
    2. Go to the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
    3. Scroll down and tap on "Accessibility".
    4. Tap on "Touch".
    5. Toggle the switch next to "AssistiveTouch" to the off position.

A Promising Future

While the double tap gesture may not be as useful as some had hoped, Apple is continuously working to improve its features. The company is currently testing watchOS 10.2, which will bring on-device Siri for Health-related questions and revive a beloved gesture.
