Get Ready for Winter Travel
Amtrak has just announced an exciting flash sale for all you train travelers out there. From now until November 15th, you can snag discounted fares for travel between December and mid-March. Whether you're planning a trip along the Northeast Corridor, in the Midwest, or on the West Coast, there are deals to be had.
Score Cheap Fares
If you're looking for the absolute cheapest fares, the Northeast Corridor is where you want to be. One-way coach fares start at just $4. For those in the Midwest, fares start at $34, and West Coast travelers can find fares as low as $22.
Act Fast – Limited Availability
Keep in mind that these discounted fares are limited. There may be restrictions on availability and seating, so make sure to book early. Also note that the fares listed may not be available at the time of your booking.
Round-Trip Savings
While the sale is advertised as one-way fares, you may be able to find discounted one-way tickets for both legs of your journey, effectively creating a round-trip. For example, we found a one-way trip from NYP to BOS for just $16 and a $25 fare on the return trip, bringing the total round-trip cost to $41.
Understanding the Fare Structure
Amtrak recently announced a simplified fare structure. Sale fares incur a 50% cancellation fee if you need to cancel before your departure, and they cannot be modified. Value fares, which are slightly more expensive, allow for cancellations with a 75% refund before your trip. Flex fares, on the other hand, are fully refundable and changeable for free if canceled before departure.
Additional Savings and Points
If you have Amtrak Guest Rewards points, you can use them to book this sale. For example, the NYP to BOS route mentioned earlier can be booked for just 1,426 points round trip, but you'll need to return on the 7:55 p.m. train. Also, don't forget to use a credit card that earns bonus points on travel to maximize your savings.
