Apple's Success with iPad Cellular Plans
Apple's iPad has long had the advantage of being able to set up a cellular plan, allowing users to stay connected on the go. Now, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is working on a cellular MacBook. However, the road to release may not be easy.
Apple's Goals for Cellular Modem
Gurman discusses Apple's success with its Apple Silicon chips and its ambitions to develop its own cellular modem. The company also plans to eventually replace Broadcom's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi processor with its own. This move comes after news last week that Apple is delaying its 5G modem until at least 2026 due to development challenges.
Potential Release Date and Benefits
If all goes well, a cellular MacBook could be released in the late 2020s, starting from 2028. This would allow users to use their MacBook models on the go without relying on personal hotspots from their iPhones. This would be particularly beneficial for journalists, digital nomads, and those who work in coffee shops and libraries.
Obstacles in the Way
However, there are concerns about Apple's ability to develop its own cellular chip. Gurman suggests that the company is still far from being able to compete with Qualcomm in this area. Given the importance of getting it right, it may take longer than anticipated for Apple to replace Qualcomm and release a cellular MacBook.
